Why your brakes squeal — and whether it matters

Brake squeal is the noise riders in Dubai report most, and it is the one most often misdiagnosed. The instinct is to assume the pads are worn out and order new ones. In most cases the pads are fine and something on the braking surface is not.
The useful distinction is between a clean high squeal and a rough grinding. A squeal is usually vibration between a hard pad surface and the rotor or rim — contamination or glazing. Grinding is material that should not be there: metal, grit, or a pad worn past its friction layer.
Two things make this worse here than elsewhere. Blown sand from the desert tracks embeds in soft pad compounds and turns them abrasive. And bikes washed on a balcony often pick up overspray from chain lube — the most common contamination we see, and entirely avoidable by lubing the chain after a wash rather than before.
What usually causes it
Listed most likely first. Work down the list — the top one is right more often than not.
Contaminated pads
How to tell: The squeal appeared suddenly, often after a wash, a chain lube, or a wet ride. Braking still works but feels vague.
The fix: Pads cleaned and de-glazed, rotor or rim degreased. If oil has soaked into the pad material it cannot be washed out and the pads are replaced.

Glazed pads from long descents or heavy braking
How to tell: A shiny, glassy surface on the pad. Common on bikes ridden hard down Hatta or braked constantly in traffic.
The fix: Pad surface sanded back to fresh material and the rotor cleaned. Takes minutes and often fixes the noise completely.

Loose or misaligned caliper
How to tell: The squeal comes and goes with wheel position, or you can rock the caliper by hand.
The fix: Caliper realigned to the rotor and bolts set to torque.

Worn pads down to the backing
How to tell: A harsh grinding rather than a clean squeal, and the lever pulls much closer to the bar than it used to.
The fix: New pads. If the rotor has been scored by metal-on-metal contact it may need replacing too.

Dust and sand glazing the braking surface
How to tell: Squeal that is worse after riding Al Qudra or anywhere with blown sand, and improves briefly after rain.
The fix: Rotor or rim and pads cleaned properly. In Dubai this is maintenance, not a fault.
Brake adjustmentAED 45
Worth knowing: A squeal on its own is usually cosmetic. A lever that pulls most of the way to the bar is not — that is a hydraulic or wear problem and the bike should not be ridden in traffic until it is looked at.

Do squealing brakes mean my pads are worn out?
Usually not. Contamination and glazing cause most squeals, and both happen long before a pad is worn. Worn pads tend to grind rather than squeal, and come with a lever that travels much further than it used to.
Will WD-40 stop the squeal?
No — it will make it much worse and can ruin the pads permanently. Never put a penetrating oil or general lubricant anywhere near a braking surface. If pads have been sprayed, they need replacing.
Why did my brakes start squealing after I washed the bike?
Degreaser or chain lube reaching the rotor or rim is the single most common cause we see. It is also the easiest to fix if it is caught early, before the contamination soaks into the pad material.
